"I memorized hundreds of words, and I still failed the interview."

Eiken trips people up in the same two places at every level: the second-stage interview, and the essay. Both are hard to practise alone, and both are where a vocabulary book stops helping.

So those two are what we work on.

Answers that stop after three words. Long silences before you start. Essays nobody ever marks. I know what each of those looks like and how to fix it, one at a time.

Small classes and one consistent teacher. The standard your writing is marked against does not change from week to week.

This Course Works Best If...

This course works best if:

  • You know which grade you are sitting, and when
  • You want someone to practise the interview with
  • You want your essays actually marked
  • You passed the written half and failed the interview

Note: if you are a junior high student aiming at Grade 3 or below, start with Junior High English — that prep is included there. This course can also run alongside regular lessons; see High School English.

This course may not suit you if:

  • You are aiming at TOEIC, TOEFL or IELTS. Those have their own course: TOEIC, TOEFL & IELTS Preparation.
  • You're seeking casual conversation practice without exam goals. In that case, the Adult Conversation course might be a better fit.
  • You prefer completely self-paced study without regular check-ins. Self-study materials or online platforms may suit you better.

Grade by Grade

Not sure which grade to sit? Eiken's own benchmarks: Grade 3 is end of junior high, Pre-2 is mid high school, Grade 2 is end of high school. The weekly course here is for Pre-2 and above; Grade 3 and below is covered in the Junior High course.

Grade 3 and below — end of junior high

Prep for Grade 3 and below is included in regular lessons on the Junior High course, at no extra charge.

If a test date is one to three months out, the Exam Sprint Pack below can run short, intensive preparation for it.

Pre-2 and Pre-2 Plus — mid high school

The first grade most high schoolers aim for. Pre-2 Plus is new in 2025 and sits between Pre-2 and Grade 2.

The interview now wants an opinion and a reason for it, in English, on the spot.

Grade 2 — end of high school

The grade universities and employers actually ask about. The essay carries serious weight and is where most marks are lost.

Every essay gets marked, and we go through the corrections together rather than handing back a score.

Pre-1 and Grade 1

Topics you would find hard to argue in your own language, let alone English.

Work here is about building an argument into English shape, and finishing inside the time limit.

Why This Support Makes Sense

Marking essays and running mock interviews are the two things you cannot do alone. They are also where the score moves fastest. One teacher, one standard, every time — so the feedback in week eight means the same thing it meant in week one.

Two Ways to Sit the Speaking Test

The speaking test runs two ways, and they are not the same test to prepare for. Whichever you have booked, we build the lessons around it.

In person, with an examiner

You sit opposite a real person and answer out loud. The examiner waits while you think, and a stumble can be recovered from.

What makes this hard is rarely the English. It is speaking it while a stranger looks at you. So we practise it the only way that works — mock interviews in the classroom, with a foreigner sitting across the table, until the room stops being the problem.

On a computer (英検S-CBT)

A headset and a microphone. Your answers are recorded and nobody is in the room. Every answer has a countdown on screen, and it starts the moment the recorded voice stops.

Nothing waits for you here, so the practice is different: starting immediately, keeping going when a word will not come, and knowing what the screen does before the day.
